AUTHOR INTERVIEW

So Lisa, this is your 10th book. What would you like readers to know about it?

Well, it is based on true events but I have written it with a twist.

That sounds intriguing, can you elaborate?

Let’s just say that everything in the book is true … almost.

Your last book WEEDMONKEY is an Amazon bestseller and ranked you into the Top 100 Authors on Amazon. Does this book have a similar theme?

Well, Weedmonkey was based on the life of my mother Victoria and took place during the Depression. Down Came November is based on tragedies that befell me after my mother passed away. Weedmonkey was her story, this is mine.

How long did it take you to write this new book?

It took me just a few months. I actually came up with the title about eight years ago. That’s how I do it. I come up with the title first then write a story around it.

In the book you talk a lot about a dog named Kurgan. Was he really your dog or was he a made up character?

No, Kurgan was the love of my life! He was a pure bred Rottweiler I got when he was just 10 weeks old and I lost him on March 12, 2013 when he was 15 years old.

Wow, that is old for a Rottweiler! Do you have any other pets?

Yes! I lost two dogs last year and two dogs this year. I now have one dog left, a black Rottweiler named Vladimir but his nickname is Vladdy. He will be nine on Christmas day. I have also several cats; Scotty, Midnight, Vinnie, Egypt and Fluffer.

What are you working on now?

Actually I have about 15 books in my mind to get started on and am working on my next one now. I try to stay focused and do one at a time but I have been known to work on two and three at the same time.

How can you do that? That sounds crazy!

It is, but I like to go back and forth to keep it fresh. However lately I have just been working on one at a time.

Do you have another job other than author?

I have been a feature writer and columnist for The Brunswick Citizen newspaper for 15 years. I am also a local artist who created Magic Forest Gypsy Stones which are bohemian and whimsical rock art.

Wow, you have so many talents! What did you want to be when you were a child?

I wrote my first story when I was about eight years old and always dreamed of being a writer. I also wanted to be an actress and a movie star. Then as a teenager I wanted to be a supermodel and marry a rock star! ☺

What advice would you give someone who wants to be an author?

Well, it sounds cliché’ but don’t give up. I’m serious. If you really want to write then write. I have often been discouraged and was just about to hang it up when Weedmonkey took off! Just keep at it, keep writing and keep promoting. Put in the effort and it will pay off.

What is the best advice you could give someone about using social media?

First off, you must engage with other people. Do not and I repeat do not get on sites like Facebook and Twitter and say Hey buy my book!!! People will turn off from you real quick! You must make friendships, build relationships, again engage, retweet them, like their pages and so on. It takes time but like I said before, put in the effort.

How important do you think it is to have an editor?

It is vitally important! Most writers are not editors and most editors are not writers but for some reason they fit together nicely. J I made the mistake of putting out one of my books unedited thinking that it was some sort of masterpiece or something. It got a lot of reviews and most of them were horrible! Bad grammar, poor sentence structure and so on. It made me sick! But at the time I couldn’t afford an editor. It was a catch 22. So when I could afford one, I hired her to edit it for me. Now I would never, ever send out anything without an editor, ever!

What if a new author can’t afford an editor? Like you said you couldn’t at first?

Check around, ask other authors, posts your requests, etc. I found one author who does editing on the side and at very reasonable prices. Also, you can offer trade. Work out something where you will promote her services if you get a discount. Oftentimes editors are willing to work with new clients on fees, esp if the editor is just starting out. Others are not and their prices are fixed. You just have to live and learn.

How would you describe yourself?

I am a Bohemian rocker chick with a goofy sense of humor. I am loyal and honest. I love to bake and cook and I love to spread positive energy to everyone I meet. I also believe in magic!

Who do most people say you remind them of?

Stevie Nicks! I get it all the time and I love it! ♥

Thank you Lisa for taking the time to speak with us today! Where can readers find your new book?

All of my books can be found on Amazon.

How Hard Is It To Be Kind To One Another?

I was at the drug store today and the clerk said, “You just blow in here like a little ball of sunshine don’t you?”

I said, “What do you mean?”

She laughed and said, “You come in here and brighten up the place, you make people smile, you get them talking to one another…you are just so positive! How do you do that every day?”

I leaned in and said, “I’ll tell ya a secret…that’s what we are all here to do but I am just one of the few people who get it.”

However, I didn’t use to get it, in fact, I was about as far away from “getting it” as someone could possibly be.

I had to go through the pits of hell until I could get it, until I could see that what I was doing was wrong and the way I was acting was the wrong way to treat people.

Now, I am a different person.

Let me tell you something, I cannot understand why we, as human beings, walk by one another without speaking to each other.

It only takes a second to speak to people, to say hello, good morning, good afternoon, good evening, Happy Halloween, Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, Happy Birthday, how are you today…whatever! Speak to each other!

It only takes a second to hold the door for someone, to offer an elderly person help with their groceries, to take a grocery cart back for someone, to let someone in line go ahead of you when they only have a few things and you have a cart full, to ask someone if they are doing okay…how hard is it?!?

Ya know, I have been through hell and I know what it’s like to be angry, be unhappy, and be mad at the world. I know what it’s like to be a bully and walk around with a chip on your shoulder. I used to be a rude person, a hateful, evil person who treated people like dirt. In short, I was a nasty, vindictive, bitch of a shrew. Do you know what that meant? It meant I was an unhappy person.

But I didn’t know what real unhappiness was until 2006…that is when my hell began and plunged me into a dark and dusty place and it took me almost four years to find my way out.

In that awful place, I lost myself for many years then suddenly I saw the light and I began to grow and change into another person.

No matter how hard it was for me during that time, I am now forever grateful for having gone through it.

I know what it’s like to be depressed and have suicidal thoughts haunt my mind and my sleep every day and every night and I know what it’s like to be alone. I know what it’s like to be scared of the next day and what I might do to get through or not get through it.

I also know what it’s like to wake up breathing and curse the fact that you are still alive.

It wasn’t until I went though hell and hit rock bottom that I was mowed down over and over again and I had no where to go but up, did I change. I CHANGED!!!

Rock bottom is the solid foundation on which I rebuilt my life.

And believe me, I was a firm believer that people DID NOT change. I didn’t believe it until it happened to me.

Now I speak to everyone, I want to make people happy, to make them smile and to feel good about themselves. I want to be the person they think of when they are having a bad day. Think of me and smile and know that it will all be okay.

If I can change and make a difference in this world, so can you.

We need to realize that we are all in this together. We need to get along and make it work.

Be the person who makes a difference instead of just taking up space.

I am not ashamed to admit the kind of person I used to be, I tell you so you can see that it is possible for people to “get it” after going through such pain.

I learned to embrace the changes in my life and I chose to use them as opportunities to grow. You can too!

I know there will never be peace on Earth and not everyone will magically get along but we can do our part, even if it’s a small part, while we are here.

So the next time you pass someone on the street, speak to them and watch their reaction. I guarantee you they will smile and in turn, you will feel good too! ♥

FROM SELF~PUBLISHING TO AGENTED AUTHOR…AWESOME ARTICLE!!!

Hi Everyone!

Well, it was in the 60’s today here in Maryland, not bad for a January day! I took Kurgan and Harley out and played ball with them in the back yard. We had a blast!

I came across another cool article that I really enjoyed and I wanted to share it with you. It gave me a lot of hope as a self~published author and I hope it helps you too.

It’s called From “Self-Published Success to Agented Author.” Check it out!

http://www.writersdigest.com/editor-blogs/guide-to-literary-agents/from-self-published-success-to-agented-author?et_mid=531839&rid=3095933

I watched the movie “DEVIL”  last night which is about five people who get trapped in an elevator and soon discover, to their horror, that one of them is the devil! Ouch! It had some scary scenes that had me putting the covers over my eyes. Yes, yes, even though I write that stuff, I still get freaked out. If I don’t write it, I have no control over it! That’s why my characters don’t scare me, well sometimes they do but I tell them to cool it and they usually listen since they need me to tell their story! 🙂

AUTHOR INTERVIEW/GUEST BLOGS

February and March are totally filled now and I am looking for authors for April. Man, the year is going by so fast it seems. If you are interested, please see my contact info below.

MONTHLY CONTEST

It’s almost time to open up my monthly contest starting in February! Every month I will be giving away a FREE copy of one of my books, your choice.

The choices are (these will be repeated later)

THE RAINBOW WON’T WAIT

A dying mother’s advice for the obstinate daughter she is leaving behind.

When the author lost her mother in 2006, she could have been a better daughter. She tried to be the daughter that her mother wanted and needed at this time of sorrow but she didn’t know how to be that person.

In a collection of short pieces of advice, the author has put together words of comfort and wisdom that her Cherokee mother gave her over the years. She never knew at the time, that this advice would help her as she took care of a dying parent. It also served as a catalyst to help her regain her footing after a series of tragedies following her mother’s death, left her in a crippling, suicidal depression for three years.

A story of hope, inspiration and how a briar of a child became the flower that her mother always dreamed of…but died before she got a chance to see her bloom.

PUNCTURE

PUNCTURE

A hauntingly beautiful tale about vampire love and betrayal between a mortal and an undead.

Craving a taste for the dark side, Veronica gets more than she bargained for when she is seduced by Victor, an evil and dangerous vampire. His obsession with her runs her off the road to Heaven and soon she too will turn her back on righteousness.

Longing to be mortal again and trapped in the darkness of an immortal life, she struggles with knowing right from wrong, Heaven from Hell, and love from hate.

But when she discovers the truth about her dark prince, will it be too late? Will her new vampire friend help her destroy the only man she has ever loved? And why is he so willing to help her destroy him?

You will fall in love with the innocent Veronica and her search for love, feel her joy at rekindling an old flame and die with her as the love of her life becomes her murderer.

Victor is a charming but wicked vampire who could compel a corpse on the gallows to speak. We follow him as he preys on Veronica, senses her weakness and watch as he pounces on her and destroys her with just…one…puncture.

Every woman knows a man like Victor…

DRAGGED INTO DARKNESS

An abusive husband kills his wife then dies in prison and is sent to Hell. After making a deal with the devil, he must go through seven levels of Heaven to retrieve her and bring Satan back her soul. But the trip up to Heaven is not so easy for this murderer who is entangled in a business arrangement with the devil. The agreement involves two road maps, one to Heaven and one back down to Hell, bribing angels, being conned by demons, facing karmic debt and searching his way through a paradise where he is not welcome to find his dead wife and ruin her peaceful eternity.

BENEATH THE BATTLEFIELD

A civil war ghost story about a young soldier describing the horrors of war in letters to his mother back home. After fighting in the battle of Antietam, his life is forever changed and he becomes frightened by the changes around him.

KING OF SHADOWS

A dark and wispy tale of an angry and vicious man who is hell bent on raising his wayward son even though the man committed suicide and is no longer an earthly being but a demon hidden behind a veil of shadows.

Darien and Lucinda’s son died as an infant. The baby, whose soul was pure, rejected his evil father and his violent ways.

After enduring years of abuse, Lucinda has had enough. After she leaves Darien, she finds him dead from a gunshot wound to the head.

Nine months later she gives birth to another son, a son born of evil and ready and willing to be the child that Darien has longed for.

What follows is a hellish nightmare with a demonic son whose guidance from a long dead father he never knew, makes Lucinda’s life a living hell. A father who committed suicide and now a nobody, a lost soul, hidden behind a veil of shadows.

MEET THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THE RAINBOW WON’T WAIT…

Hi again!

Well, it’s still cold out there and I am wearing two coats in the house. Crazy huh? But that is farm living in an old Victorian home!  I love it here though and wouldn’t have it any other way! 🙂

I wanted to introduce you to the inspiration behind my new book, THE RAINBOW WON’T WAIT, my mother Victoria.

This book was written after I lost my mom to cancer in 2006. It is a tribute to her and is very dear to my heart.

I hope those of you who knew her and those who have only heard me speak of her, will enjoy reading this book.

Her favorite saying was, “The work will wait while you show the child the rainbow, but the rainbow won’t wait while you do the work”…I got a lot of comfort from Ma’s advice over the years and I hope you find comfort here as well. 🙂
